After reading this article, you may also be interested in learning more about purchasing a Globber scooter. Please read our article. If you live in a big city, you've probably seen a lot of electric scooters lately. In this article you will learn how these scooters work and how they are charged.
How it all started
The business of renting electric scooters began when companies that offered bicycle rental services recognized the new option. Lime was one of the first companies to do so, and the company almost gave up its bicycle-sharing agenda, making big profits now with electric scooters.
Many new companies are emerging and big companies like Ford Motors are entering the market. Razor, one of the first scooter companies, was also involved. There are brands from around the world trying to tap into this new madness of rental scooters. Uber and Lyft saw that scooters caused them to lose some customers, so they also seized the opportunity.
One of the most successful brands that introduced this riding system was Bird. The brand has driven the move and is now a leader in the field. Lime and Bird are the two unicorn companies that make full use of this transport system (unicorn means a startup worth more than $ 1 billion).
Who makes the scooters?
However, the vast majority of these scooters are not manufactured by the companies that offer them for rent, but are made in China. When Bird's employees started working in this field, they did not really know how the general public would react to them, so they only ordered a few electric scooters that were made for the general consumer.
These scooters worked very well and the other companies took the example. None of them waited for electric scooters made specifically for this business. That's why most scooters you find on the streets of your city today are similar to those originally used by Bird. It's just that each one of them is a bit like the owner's logo and style.
The main company supplying these scooters is Ninebot, a brand from China, which is funded by Xiaomi, a major Chinese electronics manufacturer. The company also owns the Segway brand. So if you see one of these names on an electric scooter, they all come from the same company.
Most companies that already manufacture scooters have begun to create new work spaces to increase their productivity. However, scooters are not yet available for commercial use, so the product is still in its early form.
How does the loading work?
As you may know, these electric scooters are powered by batteries that are in them. These are lithium-ion batteries, which are very similar to those in your smartphone or laptop. People lend the scooters, they drive with them and at the end of the day the battery is exhausted if the scooter is used long enough.
However, nobody likes a scooter with a low battery. If the battery runs out of energy, the scooter runs extremely slowly. When the battery is completely discharged, you will not be able to drive the electric scooter because the wheels are blocking. If the battery falls below a certain percentage, the landlords have a system that prevents users from driving on this scooter.
This means that someone has to come to recharge these electric scooters. And if you do that, you have to make it fast at night so that the scooters are ready to go the next day. An army of employees charging the scooters at night would be too expensive, so the landlords will do it differently.
Who charges the scooters?
Each brand has its own "chargers" that collect the scooters and charge overnight. Bird and Lime are the biggest in the business, so they work with freelancers and rely on contract workers to pick up their scooters and load them overnight.
Almost anyone can be a charger or juicer, as Lime calls his freelancer. You can apply in the app of the respective company. Once you've got the approval, you can start collecting scooters and calculating them. You will then receive a payment.
They can even be a multi-company charger at the same time, and you'll be glad to know that electric scooters use very similar cables so you can charge a lime scooter with a Bird charger. If you collect scooters, you will first see them on the map of the app.
